Privacy Policy
Last updated: August 2025
Introduction
Berline ("Berline," "we," "our," "us") provides a mobile app that lets users view and share real-time information about venue queues and events. This Privacy Policy explains what personal data we process, why, and your rights under the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). We are the data controller for the processing described here.
1. Controller
Egemen Toykan, Berline Technologies, Kollwitzstr. 76, 10435 Berlin, Germany. Email: contact@berlineapp.com
2. What We Collect
Account data: email address, username, authentication method (Apple/Google/email), device identifiers needed for sign-in. Queue updates (user-submitted): venue, timestamp, and wait-time info you provide. We do not store your precise device location for these standard updates. Track My Wait (optional): device location (latitude/longitude + timestamps) while enabled, to estimate your waiting time and improve predictive models. Push notifications: device tokens (APNs/FCM) if you opt in. Analytics & diagnostics: app events/usage, crash and performance data (Firebase); optional Smartlook session recordings if you enable them in settings. Media (optional): profile photo if uploaded. We do not collect special categories of data (e.g., health, ethnicity) nor payment card data.
3. Why We Process Your Data (Legal Bases)
Provide and secure the app (contract, Art. 6(1)(b); legitimate interests, Art. 6(1)(f)): account, authentication, basic telemetry to keep services secure and prevent abuse. Queue sharing & event browsing (contract): create and display user-submitted queue updates and event info. Track My Wait (consent, Art. 6(1)(a)): process location to estimate waiting time and improve models. You can stop at any time in the app. Push notifications (consent): send alerts you opt into. Analytics/diagnostics (legitimate interests and/or consent, depending on your locale): understand performance and improve the app. In the EU/EEA, analytics and ads identifiers only run after your consent. UX research via Smartlook (consent): disabled by default; runs only if you opt in.
4. In-App Web Content & Cookies
We sometimes display third-party content (e.g., SoundCloud artist previews) in an in-app web view. These providers may receive technical data (e.g., IP address) and set cookies or local storage inside the app's web view. We do not read those cookies and they are not shared with your phone's external browser. Cookies may persist inside the app until they expire or you clear app data / delete the app.
5. International Transfers
Some vendors are based outside the EEA. Where data is transferred internationally, we rely on: The EU–U.S. Data Privacy Framework for certified U.S. recipients, and/or Standard Contractual Clauses (SCCs) plus supplementary measures where needed.
6. Vendors (Processors) We Use
Google Firebase (auth, messaging, crash & performance, analytics), Google Maps SDK (map display/venues), Apple / Google (authentication), Amazon Web Services (AWS, eu-central-1/Frankfurt) (infrastructure, media storage), AWS SES (transactional email), Smartlook (optional session recording). We have data-processing agreements in place.
7. Retention
Account data: kept while your account exists. Queue updates: shown while your account exists. If you delete your account, we unlink your identity; we may retain aggregated/de-identified updates for statistics and modeling. Track My Wait (location): kept while enabled and your account exists. On account deletion we unlink and retain de-identified data for modeling. Push tokens: removed when you log out or disable notifications. Analytics & logs: typically kept up to 90 days for diagnostics/security. We keep aggregated or de-identified data without a time limit, but it no longer identifies you.
8. Your Choices & Rights
You have the rights to access, rectification, deletion, restriction, portability, and objection (Arts. 15–21 GDPR). You can withdraw consent at any time. How to exercise your rights: use the in-app settings (export/delete) or email contact@berlineapp.com. We may ask to verify your identity. You can also complain to your data-protection authority. In Berlin: Berliner Beauftragte für Datenschutz und Informationsfreiheit, Friedrichstraße 219, 10969 Berlin, Tel: +49 30 13889-0, Email: mailbox@datenschutz-berlin.de
9. Security
We use encryption in transit, hardened infrastructure, and least-privilege access. No system is 100% secure, but we regularly review controls and vendor compliance.
10. Children's Data
Berline is not directed to children under 16. Users must be at least 16 years old to use the app.
11. Automated Decision-Making
We do not make decisions with legal or similarly significant effects solely by automated means. Our wait-time predictions are informational only.
12. Changes
We'll post updates here and, for material changes, notify you in-app or by email. Prior versions are available on request.
